“I arrived in Chile on Wednesday morning June 4 and went to Leyda for the remainder of the week. Spending those quiet days in the country with the Oblates and Jose Manuel’s family was a welcome respite for me and allowed me to reconnect with the Oblates. My last visit to Chile had been in January of 2022, and a lot had happened since then, most notably the deaths of Ignacio and Monato. The experience of quiet and prayer in Leyda was a perfect way to begin this visit!
I returned to Santiago on Monday July 7, and first went to the Cemetery to pray at the graves of Ignacio and Monato. It was a very moving experience for me and helped me to “put closure” on my friendship with the both.
That evening, I was asked to speak at the General Vespers in honor of the Feast of Saint Benedict. I related how my experience of being connected to the Movement over the last 25 years has shaped my own spiritual life (especially in deepening my experience of lectio divina) and in contributing to the growth of Benedictine spirituality in my school in Saint Louis.
On Tuesday, I spent the day at Collegio San Benito, and enjoyed the festive Divine Office and lunch served for all the faculty and staff. That evening, I visited the monastery at Los Condes and had a pleasant visit with the monks there (it had been over 10 years since I last visited them).
On Wednesday I visited Collegio San Laurenzo, and on Thursday I visited Collegio San Anselmo, where four students from Saint Louis Priory School are spending some weeks. I return to Saint Louis on Thursday evening.
This visit has filled me with great joy and gratitude. Over these more than 25 years, I have grown in my appreciation of the friendship that I share with so many here in the Movement. I have also seen how we have shared in many mutual projects over the years that have born much fruit. As always, I look forward to welcoming any members of the Movement who can visit us in Saint Louis.
As we say in Saint Louis: Laus Tibi Domine! (Praise to you, O Lord!)”.
